Letter to the Editor: Bikes, be gone!
Re: “Ban has cyclists grinding gears – City says FM455 could reopen to bikes if road becomes safer,” June 15 Metro story.
By Bob Kirby
Excerpts:
Robin Stallings stated that this was about freedom and the right to decide what is safe and not safe. Using this logic, should we not have any traffic laws and allow people to drive or ride any way they wish in the name of freedom? Mr. Stallings states, “Some people need these bikes for transportation.” In Anna, folks who need bikes for transportation are precious few.
Mr. Stallings states that every taxpayer has the right to the roadways he or she paid for with tax money. I don’t know where he got this, but it is absurdly false. Mr. Stallings seems to forget that society has rights and that the rights of an individual or group end where the rights of society begin. Safety is a right society should have on the roadways of America, and this, at times, may place limits as to how they are used.
