On October 7, 2009, BikeTexas staff attended the Bike And Walk to School Day at Murchison Elementary in Pflugerville. The steady stream of parents and children walking and biking to school was a tribute to the success of the event. Many children carried signs that they had made to promote the day.
SuperCyclist teacher Docia Craft estimated that 500 students and parents walked or biked to school that day. The bicycle rack was overflowing with bicycles!
At the end of their journey, the students were greeted with autographs and encouragement by “Fitness Heroes”, athletes and coaches from the nearby middle and high school.
International Bike and Walk to School Day is part of the encouragement component of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. The five E’s of a SRTS program are Education, Encouragement, Engineering, Enforcement and Evaluation
