Back before BikeTexas had license plates for your car or motorcycle to support our education programs, we had to choose the right designs that people who ride bikes around the state would love to have on their vehicles. You voted and the winners were chosen– the Share the Road plate was the first one created, in 2004. The Texas Trails plate, the most recent addition to the bicycling specialty plates, has been part of the family since 2011.
Also in 2011, some lawmakers in the legislature saw in the specialty plates an opportunity to help with the state’s budget and proposed diverting 50% of the specialty license plate revenue away from the groups that benefit from them and into a general fund. BikeTexas and other nonprofits fought back and the idea was defeated.
