The Shop

In the heart of downtown Austin, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop lives in an historic warehouse building on Nueces Street.

The Philosophy

More than a retail box, Lance and his friends aim to make the shop a hub of cycling life, commuting, social activity, fitness, and a temple of two-wheeled living. To serve the bike community is our job, but to convert people to a bike life is our mission.

The Stuff

* Bikes for racers, commuters, fixies and fitness
* Service by pros to keep you tuned.
* Parts & Gear for speed, function, & style.
* Apparel for performance and fashion.
* Showers, lockers & storage for commuters!

The Downtown Bike Station

Leave your bike at the shop and the mechanics will give it a once-over or a service at your request.

STORAGE LOCKERS

Bike Education

Wednesday Maintenance Class
Each week our service staff demo’s how to keep your ride on the road. Topics include flat fixing and drive train cleaning and maintenance. Check the calendar for the weekly schedule.

Wheel Building Class

From picking out parts to lacing to truing, this class guides you through the entire wheel building process. Special discounts on parts and tools are available to students.

Traffic Skills 101
Learn to ride safely and efficiently — to work, to the store, around your neighborhood or around the state. Most of us were taught to ride a bike by a parent when we were very small, and our bike education ended at that time. In fact, we were simply taught how to ride without falling down too often. But few of us were ever taught how to drive our bicycle in traffic. Traffic Skills 101 fills that gap. It is Driver’s Ed for cyclists. Traffic Skills 101 is taught by League-certified instructors, and the curriculum covers everything including bike selection, simple maintenance, fixing a flat, and strategies for riding a bike safely and confidently.

Traffic Skills 101 mini-clinics
For those afraid of commitment, we offer the classroom portion of Traffic Skills 101 broken into small fun-size mini-clinics. Attend just those topics you are interested in or attend them all. These rotate times and are frequently paired with a bike ride. Check the calendar for our next session.

Scout-A-Route Rides
Although these are not technically a class, we guarantee you will learn something new each ride. Using the City of Austin bike routes we explore a new neighborhood each week for commuting routes. You’ll see streets and hidden trails you never knew existed plus you’ll learn tips for riding safely in traffic and improving your bike handling skills. It’s a social group that welcomes beginners and has been known to hang out in local coffee shops.

Newbie School

Brand new to the bike? Let’s spend some time getting to know your ‘ride’. We will go through some basic skills like figuring out just what all those levers do. We’ll finish with a ride on some of our favorite paved bike trails so you’ll be ready to roll in your neighborhood.
