On February 16, Brenda Chuleewah, local outreach coordinator for BikeTexas Safe Routes to School in Wichita Falls met with the Kate Haynes Elementary PTA. Attendee included Trey Sralla, PTA President, six PTA members and Mr. Galyean, Principal of Kate Haynes. The school’s PE teachers were trained in the Texas SuperCyclist Curriculum in May 2005.
Chuleewah explained the Texas Bicycle Coalition’s Safe Routes to School Program and SuperCyclist Program to the PTA members. The members were interested to hear how the programs benefit their children by providing safety education and fitness opportunities. They were also interested to hear how BikeTexas Safe Routes to School benefits the whole community by significantly increasing Wichita Falls’ chances of receiving transportation enhancement funds to improve bicycle access on roads and trails.
Chuleewah also talked about the upcoming Texas Walk & Bike to School Day and asked for a volunteer team leader. Rosalind Lawry, a parent from Kate Haynes, volunteered to be the team leader. Thanks to wonderful volunteers like Rosalind, supportive principals like Mr. Galyean, leading PE teachers like Kimberly Brooks and Staci Scarborough and the dedication of Texas Bicycle Coalition, the children at Kate Haynes Elementary will be encouraged to lead healthy, safe, active lifestyles.
