Summer fun leads into Back-to-School travel safety for Girl Scout Troop 189. Neighbors and passersby got a glimpse of the Troop as the girls practiced on the Avondale Elementary School parking lot Tuesday, July 24th afternoon.
Starting and stopping, hand signals, scanning, rock dodge, steering around hazards, rock split, quick stop, snail race and other drills on bike safety kept the group busy in the hot sun. Instruction on the ABC Quick Check was beneficial as some of the girls discovered minor problems with their bikes as they began the drills. Later, while resting in the shade, discussions on bicycle parts identification, how to fix a flat, helmet fit, bike safety inspection, sharing the road and Texas bicycle laws were prime topics. The session ended with always wear a helmet and bright colored clothing, obey all traffic signs and signals, ride on the right and in a straight line, and scan frequently.
The girls and leaders went away with a new found enthusiasm as their bike riding expertise increased. Troop 189 thanked Joyce Cunningham, Local Outreach Coordinator for showing them that learning bike safety can be fun and rewarding.
