Free training to teach the SafeCyclist Curriculum
Resources for teachers and community members
Proper education of cyclists and motorists is key to improving the access and safety for bicyclists in Texas. BikeTexas is involved in many educational programs aimed towards safely getting more people on more bikes more often.
The SafeCyclist Curriculum is a comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian safety education curriculum designed for fourth and fifth grade elementary students. The SafeCyclist Certification Training provides teachers and youth community workers with bicycle and pedestrian safety skills and the curriculum needed to teach these life saving skills to their students.
This 15 lesson curriculum serves as the critical “Education Component” of a well-rounded Safe Routes to School Program. The lessons focus on rules of the road, safe cycling skills, strength building and stretching using fun physical exercises that are at least 15 minutes in length (as recommended by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education’s Physical Activity Guidelines). These activities aid physical education teachers and coaches in integrating bicycle safety education into their own state’s Physical Education objectives.
From teaching aides to guidelines for setting up Bike and Walk to School Day in your community, BikeTexas offers a wide variety of Educational Resources to inspire a greater knowledge of bicycle safety among all ages!
Texas colleges and universities are piloting BikeTexas new College Active Transportation Safety presentations at incoming student orientation sessions this Summer and Fall 2012.
Funded by the Texas Department of Transportation, BikeTexas CATS addresses the need for information and education and for reducing motor vehicle-related pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities.
For more information about piloting BikeTexas CATS at your Texas college or university this Summer or Fall, contact BikeTexas CATS.
Co-coordinated by BikeTexas, TPWD, TMBRA, and Shimano Youth Series; the BikeTexas Kids Kup events were developed to inspire the next generation of mountain bike enthusiasts as well as introduce children to basic bicycle safety and handling skills. Each BikeTexas Kids Kup event is on the Saturday before each TMBRA Series event.
Many young participants have graduated into the NORBA 10 and under, and 12 and under racing classes. Various activities introduce children to the exciting atmosphere of mountain bike racing with safety seminars, trail maintenance and access sessions, a cross-country race, and various bike safety education activities.
BikeTexas has developed an extensive guide to organizing biking and walking events for your local school and community. The Safe Routes to School Event Handbook leads you through all the steps of organzing events such as a Bike and Walk to School Day, Bike/Walk Rodeos and Bike/Walk-A-Thon Fundraisers. These fun events teach children bike safety skills while improving health and well-being and making your neighborhood safer for biking and walking.
The pages below allow you to download key handouts and materials from the handbook.

BikeTexas is developing a comprehensive set of interactive educational tools for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. These tools will teach valuable bike/walk safety skills and encourage physical fitness while also satisfying digital literacy, Texas history, and contemporary social studies educational standards.
BikeTexas is working in conjunction with Planet Texas Studios to develop a set of games targeted to 10-12 year olds, and has partnered with Diversity Interactive and Dr. Alice Christie to develop partnered educational content.
