BikeTexas Local Outreach Coordinators Sherman Phillips and Durwood Mayfield enjoyed a meeting with the Assistant Principal Drue Coleman. The principal was unable to attend but set up with a meeting with Mrs. Coleman.
Mrs. Coleman, a native of Lubbock, attended elementary school through high school in there, then after attending Texas Tech, chose to stay in Lubbock to teach. She was passionate about providing the very best education for her students.
The excitement level was greatly increased when she found out about the possibility of the school being able to partnership with BikeTexas and the city to apply for grants to enhance the ability of the students to safely walk or ride to school. There is an extremely busy street the students have to cross without the aid of any type of marked crossing. The prospect of there being a chance of having a cross walk with flashing lights there peaked her interest.
When the discussion turned to bike safety and helmet use, she told us her 5 year old son always wears his helmet even tho it did not fit very well. When we emailed her a copy of a Teacher Master Page (designed to be distributed to students) from the Texas SuperCyclist Curriculum on how to properly fit a bicycle helmet, she immediately answered back with a hearty THANK YOU.
