Sherman Phillips and Durwood Mayfield met with Jim Andrus Principal of Preston Smith Elementary school Tuesday morning. They gave Principal Andrus a brief overview of the BikeTexas Safe Routes to School Program, which was very well received. Principal Andrus was more than receptive of the evaluation portion of the program.
He reported that approximately 90% of their morning traffic is school related and that more than 90% of the students are driven to school. He welcomed any help from the BikeTexas Safe Routes to School Program to alleviate this problem. This particular elementary school is unique in that is has no children bussed to campus. This in itself contributes to the high number of students driven to school.
Principal Andrus offered help to get the program on the next PTA meeting agenda and furnished the name of the PTA “Youth Protection” leader of the Smith Elementary PTA.
