Once again Cub Scout Troop #24 called upon the Texas Bicycle Coalition Safe Routes to School Program to provide incentive for students to join the Scouts.
Thursday, September 6, 2007 was the second year for Troop #24 to request help from Bike Texas to entice students to become involved in Scouting. Local Outreach Coordinator Cunningham discussed child related bicycle safety issues, Texas Bicycle Laws, and the importance of wearing a helmet. Organized safe cycling skills drills were practiced by the Troop under Cunningham’s supervision. A snail race, riding on the right, controlled stopping and other fun activities were enjoyed by the Olsen Park Elementary School group. A to Z by Bike, and other handouts were given to reinforce the necessity of safety when bicycle riding.
As darkness fell, the energetic riders were turned back over to the Scout Leaders for a much deserved ice cream social. Thank you Cub Scouts for this opportunity to reach over 20 students from grades 1 through 5 with our safety message.
