Upon entering Hereford you will see a billboard announcing , giving you a picturesque image of this friendly Texas panhandle town. That friendliness was extended by Deaf Smith County Extension Agent Dawn Watson and Amalia Mata of the Blue Water Garden Learning Center. Watson invited Outreach Coordinators Fernando Martinez and Joyce Cunningham to provide a bicycle safety clinic on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 to the resident children. Many students would be able to travel by bicycle to school and within the town but lack of bicycle safety education limited their travel.
Twenty-five kids and three adults were eager to learn the traffic hand signals, bike parts identification and the importance of wearing a helmet. Helmet sizing and fittings were performed by Martinez and Cunningham with assistance from Watson and Mata after the bike safety clinic.
Our thanks go out to Watson and Mata for arranging this event and their concern for the health and safety of their community.
