Wheel excitement: Off-road cycling brings thrills

“I think women learn differently from men,” says Ms. Patterson, 49, a Frisco comptroller who once owned a bicycle shop with her husband. She is a board member of the Texas Bicycle Coalition. There are about 60 women at this ninth annual Women’s Mountain Bike Retreat and Clinic, sponsored by the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association (DORBA).
Despite a distinctly macho image, off-road cycling is appealing to more women, local experts say. “In the past, it’s been a gonzo, pierced-ear, tattooed-guy kind of thing,” says Susan Stormer, 33, co-director of Subaru/Bike Texas Trail Doctors and a volunteer tutor for the weekend. “That’s no longer the case.” The Trail Doctors are based in Austin.
