Ban has cyclists grinding gears
Anna: City says FM455 could reopen to bikes if road becomes safer
By Lauren D’Avolio
Excerpts:
“This is about freedom: The freedom of Texans to decide … what’s safe and what’s not safe,” said Robin Stallings, executive director of the Texas Bicycle Coalition. “Some people need these bikes for transportation. You don’t always have that choice to find another route.”
Every taxpayer has the right to the roadways they paid for with their tax money, Mr. Stallings said.
Council members sat quietly, listened and asked an occasional question as the cyclists expressed their disapproval of the ban. Mr. Stallings said he believes council members’ minds were made up before the meeting.
“There was no discussion and no questions asked of all the experts we brought,” Mr. Stallings said. “This is an important issue to the cycling community. We would not rule out legal action.”
