BikeTexas has been working with local, state, and federal elected officials as well as local groups in Houston, Dallas, and Austin to secure federal funding for trails projects in Texas. While the projects in Houston and Dallas were not selected in this round, we’re proud that Austin will receive funding for trails in underservered communities where bicycle facilities can make a difference for the neighborhood. These projects can allow for workers to commute by bike, thus cutting back on transportation costs; for families to safely pursue biking for recreation, leading to better health outcomes; and be an inspiration for similar neighborhoods and communities around the state.
Securing federal funds requires a coalition working hard together. Congressman Lloyd Doggett, Councilmember Pio Renteria and his colleagues on the Austin City Council, and the groups that form Austin Outside all worked to bring these trails one step closer to reality.
We’re not done yet: some hurdles remain to getting this funding finalized. Stay tuned for updates and action alerts as Congress continues to work on transportation issues.
