On Sunday, May 14, 2006, Texas Bicycle Coalition teamed up with Bike Barn of Houston and the Greater Houston Off-Road Biking Association (GHORBA) to hold a Kids Kup race at the Houston Grand Criterium in Sam Houston Park.
The groups coordinated a child bike safety check, helmet fitting and fun and educational activities like the Turtle (slow bike) races before the actual races. Bike Barn donated helmets and goodie bags to go with the Coalition’s safety materials, and GHORBA provided drinks, snacks and volunteers for the event.
The BikeTexas Trail Doctors set up the course of the race and the President of GHORBA, Mike Lutomski, emceed the actual races that were ordered by the age of the riders. The event included around 30 registered cyclists who ranged in ages from 4 to 10 years old, and each child who participated received a medal for their participation. There was also a raffle at the end of the races for which Texas Trek Dealers generously donated a 20” kid’s bike to the winner.
