BikeTexas kicked off Bike Month 2012 on Tuesday, May 1 with the online release of a new music video produced for our TxDOT-funded, CATS presentations on College Active Transportation Safety.
Safety Bling! features the comic rap duo — the Rhymanese Twins, aka Jon Steinmeier and Noah Tabakin. This hilarious two-headed, three-legged rap team pumps out the BikeTexas safety message with phat beats, a hysterical, while educational plot line, and the help of rival UT and A&M college students on bikes.
Safety Bling! is BikeTexas’ first CATS video complements a set of instructional presentations on bicycle and pedestrian safety destined for freshman orientation at seven to thirteen, pilot colleges and universities in Texas this Summer and Fall 2012.
What’s the need?
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Texas has the third highest number of annual bicyclist fatalities in the U.S. The majority (70%) of those fatalities occurred in urban areas.
“College students moving into urban areas to begin post-secondary studies are more economically and socially inclined to walk or cycle – some of them for the first time and without knowledge of campus area roads or safe riding techniques,”said Donna Hoffman, BikeTexas Program Manager. “For college students, education about pedestrian and bicycle safety is important for their own and others’ awareness and safety. Beside safety equipment, one of the behaviors we’ll address, for example, is distracted walking, driving, and cycling while on cell phones.”
Safety Bling! will fling its three minutes of musical mayhem onto Facebook Tuesday, May 1 with BikeTexas’ and the Rhymanese Twins’ active transportation safety message – Wear a helmet when cycling and use lights when you ride at night.
Don’t think that they look cool enough? That’s fair…
But you’ll look less cool in intensive care.
So be an egghead, ya’ll — nerdy! So protect this…
You gonna need it when you roll’n through Texas.
