On December 1-3, 2010 BikeTexas staff traveled to the Moody Gardens in Galveston to attend the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Convention.
The 87th TAHPERD convention attracts over 2000 Texas Physical Education teachers for professional growth opportunities, to share ideas and gain inspiration. BikeTexas staff provided information on the SafeCyclist Teacher Training and our educational resources that are available at no charge to Physical Education teachers, pubic safety officers and youth professionals. The program is funded by a Texas Department of Transportation grant under the Safe Routes to School program.
In the spirit of the convention theme, “Get Active” BikeTexas staff presented a 30 minute demonstration of the SafeCyclist games that are a part of the SafeCyclist Curriculum and training. The objective of the training is to play the games that they will be teaching the students. The teacher’s learned the Texas Laws and hand signals during the SafeCyclist Turnover Activity. To reinforce the learning, groups formed to create a charade for each law. The ever popular Bicycle Parts Relay was as exciting as ever with teachers learning the parts of the bicycle while being active.
