On Saturday, March 21, 2009 moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, grandfathers and friends showed up at Cameron Park in Waco to watch the children participate in the BikeTexas Kids Kup Event. The starting line for off-road course was in a spot where friends and family could sit in the shade and watch the children start and finish the ride.
Every Kids Kup event starts with a safety talk and a helmet fitting. A favorite lesson is when the children are shown how the bike will throw them if they only use the front brakes.
The racers went one round on the flat area at the start, which enabled the riders to spread out a bit. The course then became a single track trailing into the woods, and after about 5 minutes the riders popped out of the woods for a photo finish.
The Kids Kup divides children by age. The younger children ride one lap and the oldest ride 3 laps. Every child gets a medal and applause at the finish.
What better way to spend a Saturday than outdoors, in the trees, breathing the fresh air and hearing the birds chirp, and riding a bicycle with family and friends.
