Texas Bicycle Coalition is moving full steam ahead with its mission of training all Texas elementary physical education teachers in the SuperCyclist bicycle safety curriculum.
On September 30, Texas Bicycle Coalition will host its first re-training of field instructors in three years. BikeTexas Field Instructors, who are also League Certified Instructors and BikeTexas members, facilitate SuperCyclist teacher trainings.
During the re-training, these instructors will work with Coalition staff to enhance the quality and activity level of SuperCyclist teacher trainings. In doing so, field instructors will be even better qualified to lead SuperCyclist teacher trainings in the future. Participating instructors include: Doug Ballew, David Eggleston, Regina Garcia, Laura King, Stanley Kuenstler, Dean Lewis, Nancy Meredith, Susan Wagner and Gail Wellenkamp.
In addition to this great re-training opportunity, Texas Bicycle Coalition has scheduled at least half a dozen SuperCyclist teacher trainings across Texas for the month of October. Plans are underway to hold trainings at the following school districts: Birdville, Del Rio, Fort Worth, Galena Park, Lubbock and North Forest. This means that more than one hundred teachers in Texas will be educated in bicycle safety during the month of October alone. To become involved in this effort either as a course observer or a sponsor, please contact education program staff at education@biketexas.org.
In other news, the Houston ISD SuperCyclist teacher training originally scheduled for Friday, September 30, has been postponed due to Hurricane Rita evacuations. A new date has not yet been set. The critical need for this training was made apparent by the recent deaths of two Houston-area elementary students in bicycle crashes. Due to the important nature of this training, Texas Bicycle Coalition and Houston ISD are committed to rescheduling a new date in a timely manner.
