Education Director Robin Hendershot promoted the “Share the Road Y’all” license plate at a meeting of managers from 15 Harris County Tax Assessor offices on July 21, 2006 in Houston. The managers commented that this was their first-ever visit from oneof the organizations that benefit from the sales of specialty license plates. Special thanks to George Hammerlein, director of voter registration for Harris County, for his assistance scheduling the presentation.
The group learned that each time a Texas driver orders a Share the Road plate, $22 is raised for bicyclist and motorist safety education programs at Texas Bicycle Coalition. As parents, many in the group were familiar with the hazards young cyclists face, and they were very supportive of increasing bicycle safety education in Texas schools.
The Harris County managers were encouraged to place the Share the Road Y’all license plate brochures in prominent positions and keep the plates in their inventory. Each attendee received a free commemorative Lance Armstrong license plate, Lance license plate t-shirt, bicycle safety bookmarks and other education materials.
Currently, close to 2,700 Share the Road Y’all license plates have been sold in Texas compared with 13,000 similar plates in the state of Florida. Texas Bicycle Coalition hopes that outreach to tax assessor offices will help improve plate sales.
