News By Bike: Links for You to Read (Sept 11)

From BikeTexas:

VIVA! Streets is upon us! Join us on E 6th Street in Austin from 12-5 on Sunday for some family-friendly fun! Check out things to do and how to get here. Want to help out? Volunteer here.

You can win a VIVA! Streets t-shirt or other swag! Take a pic of one of our promotional purple bikes around town (generously loaned by the Yellow Bike Project), post it on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #VIVAStreetsATX, and you’re entered to win! We’ll notify the winner on Sunday.

Follow us on Periscope for all the latest action from here in the office and at our events. Want to Periscope with us? Come to VIVA! Streets for your chance to be live from BikeTexas!

The Saris 5th Grade Poster Contest is open again! Look for more info from us next week.

Congress is expected to move on transportation soon. Follow the League of American Bicyclists for the latest updates.

From around Texas:

El Paso bike share is up and rolling!! Woo-hoo!

The bicycle superhighway in North Texas is one step closer to completion.

Houston’s improved transit system is meeting expectations.

San Antonio’s new budget includes money for sidewalks.

Cyclesomatic 2015 is coming!

And so is Brownsville’s next Kidical Mass.

From elsewhere:

One Boston advocate’s unique (and decorative) solution to an unprotected bike lane.

Streetsblog suggests that other cities steal Indianapolis’s Cultural Trail. (The ideas, not the actual pavement.) Cool story: our BikeTexas staffer who grew up in an Indianapolis suburb managed to get her mother on a bicycle for the first time in forty years last summer, thanks to the combination of the Indy Cultural Trail and Pacers bikeshare. Infrastructure works!

Speaking of bikeshare– Portland looks likely to launch a system soon, with some interesting upgrades over most current systems.

How do we make every crosswalk accessible to people of varying abilities?

Have a great weekend!
