On Saturday, January 23 at 10am, Bike Hutto will be doing a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new bike rack installed at Creekside Park by the Hutto Parks and Recreation Department. Following the ribbon cutting, volunteers will participate in liter pickup throughout the park as part of their participation in the Adopt-A-Spot program. All are welcome to attend the ribbon cutting, as well as the park clean-up event afterwards.
Creekside Park officially became a “home base” for Bike Hutto in July 2015 when it received signage designating the park as the organization’s Adopt-A-Spot location. The park is located at 305 Orchard Way, along the Cottonwood Creek Trail, and contains two playscapes, as well as practice fields, picnic tables, grills, and bathrooms.
Bike Hutto director, Jessica Romigh couldn’t be happier about the new addition to the park’s amenities. “Bike racks are such a big part of the bicycling experience and help to encourage transportation by bike. If you know there is a place to lock up at the end of your trip, you are more likely to ride there. We are so pleased that the City of Hutto Parks and Recreation Department considers bike racks an important piece of their parks system and are making efforts to add bike parking.”
Bike racks play an important role in the lives of both the recreational and the commuting bicyclist. By providing a safe place to be able to secure their property, anyone riding a bike at any age can be encouraged to travel to that location. Bike racks also help to eliminate the clutter, hazards, and tree damage that comes from haphazard bicycle parking.
A bike parking needs assessment will be done by Bike Hutto in 2016 to determine other areas within Hutto, Texas in which bike racks would be beneficial. The assessment will consider potential locations for future bike racks, as well as the quantity and type of bike parking needed. Each potential location will then be prioritized based on current and future bike traffic, cost, and overall feasibility.
