To all Texas bicycle supporters:
Developments last week on the federal transportation bill are ominous and threaten to completely eliminate programs that fund trails, walking and bicycling. Right now, the Senate must hold the line in negotiations on the next federal transportation bill, and you are the key to convincing Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison to stand strong for Texas.
As reported by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, last Thursday evening, the House conferees delivered a countermeasure to the Senate offer. The Senate version had retained the compromises already reached on Transportation Enhancements, Safe Routes to School and Recreational Trails. But the House response demands further evisceration of these programs, eliminating even the downsized pot of money available to them. On top of that, it gives each state’s governor (a euphemism for Department of Transportation) the option of eliminating these programs altogether.
What you can do:
Please Contact Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison ASAP

Personal emails and phone calls have a huge impact – much more so than form letters. Your phone call or email to Senator Hutchison should:
-
- Thank the Senator for her consistent support of multi-modal transportation, including key support of the provisions in the Cardin-Cochran amendment to MAP-21.
- Ask the Senator to reject the House position and stand strong for the Senate’s solution to fully restore biking and walking programs.
- Include if possible a story or reason why support for bicycle or pedestrian transportation — on roads, trails, or as part of Safe Routes to School — are personally important to you.
Thank you for making a difference.
