You’ve probably received alerts from our national partner groups like the League of American Bicyclists, America Bikes, and America Trails about taking action to preserve all the funding available for biking and walking under MAP-21, the new federal transportation bill. Right now, we’re making it a priority to find the best course of action for Texas to make sure we get all the Transportation Alternatives funding available for our state.
We want Texas’ bike/ped funding as much anyone else. As of now, a grasstops campaign is the most effective way forward in our state. Our Executive Director is actively seeking meetings with the leaders at TxDOT, the Texas Transportation Commission, and the Governor’s office to make sure Texas doesn’t opt-out of these critical funds for biking and walking.
We know the national groups are asking for grassroots action. We appreciate that and we’re preparing our own Texas version of that right now. But as of this moment, it’s unclear what the best course of action is—we all know Texas is a unique state and it’s not certain who needs to hear from their constituency in order to make the right decision. We’re working hard to make sure we know exactly how to target your efforts so that we can all ensure Texas continues to receive these essential funds.
Are you ready to take some action? Great! This knowledge we are gathering right now will help guide your actions in the grassroots. Stay tuned! We’ll be sure to let you know exactly when is the most effective time to act to ensure we keep making Texas a great place to bike and walk.
