BikeTexas made solid progress in fighting for Complete Streets, though we will have to try again in 2013. It passed in both the House Transportation Committee and the Senate Transportation and Homeland Security Committee. Unfortunately, it did not pass through the House or Senate before the session ended, so Complete Streets will not be passed into law. We will have to try again in 2013.
We greatly appreciate all of the members who called and emailed their representatives and senators. This made the difference and allowed us to get as far as we did. This was a particularly difficult session. With a $23 billion budget deficit, and with legislators balking at every dollar spent, we had to fight for every Complete Street vote.
Click here and you can see which senators and representatives voted for and against Complete Streets. Please thank them for supporting the bill, or ask them to give you a reason in writing why they voted against it. Let us know what their responses are. This information is crucial for BikeTexas to formulate a strategy for the next legislative session. We need to know which legislators are on our side!
BikeTexas is passionate about complete streets and wants to help communities around Texas pass complete streets ordinances. If you want to help your community pass a complete streets ordinance, contact BikeTexas to discuss a legislative plan.
