Bike Jokes for International Joke Day

BikeNews; Community

lege intern ride biketexasIt's International Joke Day-- are you prepared? We scoured the web for some of the best ones out there. Try these out on your next ride! (Special thanks to Bike Hutto for sending a couple of these.)

  • What do you get if you cross a bicycle and a flower? Bike petals.
  • Why did the bicycle fall over? It was two tired.
  • What's the difference between a well-dressed person on a bicycle & a poorly-dressed person on a tricycle? Attire.
  • What does a bike call its dad? Pop-cycle.
  • Which is the cheapest bicycle you can buy? A penny-farthing.
  • "I've really had it with my dog," said the first guy to his neighbor. "He'll chase anyone on a bicycle."

"Hmmm, that is a problem," said the neighbor. "What are you thinking of doing about it?"

"Guess the only answer is to take away his bike."

And if those aren't enough, check out this gem from WABikes.

CLIPS Beer and Film Tour is TONIGHT in Austin! Come rain or shine (clear, that is- it's a night event, so not so shiny), we'll be at the Long Center Lawn at 8 PM with our friends from New Belgium. Come thirsty!

Do you live, work, or ride in Corpus Christi, Houston, Hutto, Lubbock, San Antonio, or The Woodlands? Get involved with bike happenings near you now.

Bike lights have arrived! They're going fast, so order yours today.

From around Texas:

Houston has been deadly for cyclists in recent weeks.

Austin is celebrating one year of a Complete Streets policy.

From elsewhere:

Lessons to learn from the success of Vision Zero in Europe.

Half of UK commuters live within five miles (i.e., an easy bike ride) of their destination.

There's a new report out about walkable access to jobs in the U.S. Spoiler: No Texas cities made the top 10.

Have a great weekend!

bikes rural highway biketexas take action

Updated 6-17-15 to add The Woodlands.

Cities around Texas are working on bike plans, master plans, and other plans to keep our cities and our state moving in all kinds of ways as we continue to grow. Don't miss out on what may be happening near you!

Corpus Christi: Corpus Christi's MPO is working on a strategic plan for active mobility. Take a survey or get more involved with their mapping to let them know where you ride-- and where you need to see improvement.

Houston: Take a survey for the new Houston Bike Plan here. Want to give even more input? Join the discussion here.

Hutto: Bike Hutto is hard at work to make Hutto a great place to ride a bike. Help them out by taking this survey.

Lubbock: The Lubbock City Council is working towards a a study to determine the next steps for bicycle infrastructure in Lubbock. Stay tuned for more on what you can do, but in the meantime, it's always a good idea to let your council member know you support bicycle accommodations.

San Antonio: The public comment period for the environmental statement on plans for 281 is now open. Why comment? Original plans called for a paved trail to be built along this new highway, but now that isn't in the plans. Let them know you want them to plan for active transportation every time. Additionaly, do you use VIA? Help plan the next step for public transportation in San Antonio here.

The Woodlands: The Township Board of Directors has taken the next step toward creating a Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan--a project the Bike the Woodlands Coalition has been working on for three years--by sending out a RFP for planning. Right now is a great time to contact the Board, thank them for sending out the RFP, and encourage them to see this project through so The Woodlands has a Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan.

NBB Bike for sliderFrom BikeTexas:

Transportation policymaking continues at the US Capitol, and our partners at the League of American Bicyclists and Rails-to-Trails Conservancy are staying on top of any bills or amendments that would be bad for active transportation. The Emmer Amendment that was defeated on Tuesday night is one example of what we're keeping an eye out for-- if your rep voted against it, please take a moment to send a thank you email or tweet!

Only a week to go until we have some fun at the Long Center at CLIPS Beer and Film Tour with New Belgium! We're raffling off a bike and planning for an all-around good time. Don't miss out!

From around Texas:

We're sorry to hear that we lost three people who were riding bikes in Texas this past week. Raul Alvarado Mascorro was killed outside of Mercedes, Gabino Carrizales was killed in Brownsville, and Brian Silva was killed in Austin. Our thoughts are with all three gentlemen's families.

HUGE congratulations to Richardson, the fifth Bicycle Friendly Community in Texas! Richardson joined the list this week at the Bronze level.

The Texas 4000 are well on their way; the city of St. George, Utah, expects to see them next week.

Austin's plans for protected intersections are in the news again.

San Antonio's first Ride to Vote event was small but mighty.

Three cities, three surveys-- if you live or ride in Corpus Christi, Houston, or Hutto, now is the time to get involved!

From elsewhere:

"I believe that if we keep working at it, we can make room on our roads for bikes and cars, both."

What did bicycles do for early users in the 1800s? Everything.

Portland is brightening up its crosswalks, with hopes that they'll be used by pedestrians and respected by drivers.

Stuck on a crowded transit vehicle? Art may help.

This piece takes a look at victim-blaming public safety initiatives.

Ontario, Canada, is cracking down on dooring.

Have a great weekend!
