Save the Date! June 19 is CLIPS and Beer in ATX

BikeNews; Community

Thursday, May 21 2015 13:02

Join us at the Long Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, June 19, at 8:00 pm for the CLIPS Beer and Film Tour. The CLIPS Tour is a summer-long showcase of New Belgium Beers paired with short fan-made videos that have been selected from thousands of entries.
Over the course of their five-year run, the CLIPS Beer& Film Tour has raised more than $520,000 for local organizations, and 75,000 people have joined them to sample their beer and watch films. Best of all, 100% of the proceeds for each event benefit ONE local non-profit.

We're delighted that Austin was selected as one of only a handful of cities for the CLIPS Beer and Film Tour stops, and are honored that BikeTexas is the chosen nonprofit. Come out and enjoy the rare New Belgium beers, interesting video clips, and support cycling in Austin. There will also be a chance to win a New Belgium Cruiser!

Want to us help make this event successful? Check out the available positions and sign up here. We are in most urgent need of people who are TABC certified.

Bicycle Friendly State: Texas Takes a Small Step Forward

BikeNews; Advocacy

Wednesday, May 20 2015 10:17

txdot guide to safe bicyclingThe League of American Bicyclists released the new Bicycle Friendly State rankings last week, and Texas has moved up to #30 from #33 in 2014.

BikeTexas is happy that Texas has improved its ranking after last year’s disappointing tumble. TxDOT is working on a number of activities to support bicycling in Texas, such as a bicycle safety manual and a statewide inventory of bicycle infrastructure. However, we still lack dedicated state-level funding for bicycling infrastructure, and the flexible portion of federal bike/ped money being transferred into a general fund every year. We believe Texas has the potential to be a top-20 state, but we have a long road to get there.

Meanwhile, many Texas cities have made amazing leaps forward in recent years to become better places to ride a bike. Trail networks, bike share programs, on-street bicycle networks, and safety ordinances at the city level are making their way across Texas as more and more cities understand that bicycles mean business.

With the right level of hard work, Texas will continue to improve on its way to becoming a great place to ride a bike.

Dinner + Bikes has arrived in Texas! Check out Elly Blue's Twitter feed for pictures of the places she's been in the Lone Star State. It's not too late to get tickets for most events!

Momentum Magazine published a great article in this month's edition about Brownsville! Unfortunately, it's not available on the website yet, so if you're not a suscriber to the magazine you'll have to sit tight waiting for the online version. But here's a preview: it's a fantastic overview of all the progress Brownsville has made toward being a great place to ride a bike!

Lots of Texas cities have had Bike Month proclamations and other fun events, and we're just getting started. How is your bike month going?

From around Texas:

Dallas hosted a walkable cities conference last week.

The League of American Bicyclists visited Brownsville on its Texas trip, because Brownsville is working for Bicycle Friendly Community designation.

No New Bicycle Friendly Businesses for Texas This Round

BikeNews; Community

bikes at city hall austin biketexasOn April 22, the League of American Bicyclists announced the latest list of new and renewing bicycle-friendly businesses. This time around, no Texas businesses were on the list.

However, there's no need to despair! Texas still has 25 recognized Bicycle Friendly Businesses, representing 42,548 Texas employees, and that's in addition to the 6,230,230 Texans who live in a Bicycle Friendly Community, and 84,223 Texas students who attend a Bicycle Friendly University. We know these bicycle-friendly places will continue to work hard to be even more awesome places for people who ride bikes, while other businesses, communities, and universities across the state are also working to join their ranks.

Want your business to be recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Business in the next round? Great! The League is revamping the Bicycle Friendly Business program right now to add two more application dates every year (for a total of four times a year), plus adding a few more questions to the application to help businesses around the nation on their road to being the bike-friendliest places to shop and work! The next round of applications opens in June, with the deadline to apply on July 15

Want to apply? We can help! Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  to get started.

Check out the League's recent #bikechat about the Bicycle Friendly Business program for a quick overview of some upcoming changes.

Let's continue to make Texas a great place to bike AND work!

Ready to Roll for Bike Month? Steps to Make Your May Awesome

BikeNews; Community

bike monthYou've heard it's Bike Month and you're ready to try it. Maybe your bike has been in the garage because you've been waiting for the warmer weather. Maybe the school calendar has kept you from riding as much as you'd like. Maybe you want to commute to work, but it's just too far or there are no roads you feel comfortable on. Maybe you just want a reason to celebrate with your bike!

Whatever brings you to pulling out your bike, fantastic! You can be rolling around your neighborhood in no time and celebrating all the great fun May (and beyond!) has to offer.

Get your bike ready to roll. Follow these quick steps to make sure your and all of your family's bikes are good to go!

1. Learn how to do the ABC Quick Check before every ride.

2. Make sure everyone in your family has a properly fitted helmet. (PDF download)

3. Get a refresher on the rules of the road with the Texas Bicycle Laws Activity Cards. (PDF download)

4. When's the last time you changed a flat tire? Find step-by-step instructions here. (PDF download)

5. Find more fun ways to learn about biking and walking on the BikeTexas Educational Resources page here.

6. Does your bike need a tuneup? Click here to check out the BikeTexas bike shop members in your area.

Ride around the neighborhood. Practice scanning (looking over your shoulder to see what's behind you), hand signals, changing gears, braking, and stopping.

Feeling a bit rusty on your bike? No worries! Hop on for a spin around a residental block near you to remind yourself about how it feels to be on the bike. This is a good chance to teach your kids the rules of the road, too! Having trouble remembering hand signals? Check out our Share the Road handout for a refresher. (PDF download)

biketomilkshakesTry Bike to Shop, Bike to Coffee, Bike to Eat, Bike to Church, etc., if Bike to Work isn't for you.

Who says work is the only place you can ride a bike? A tasty treat after a bike ride may be just the thing for you! Grab the family, find a friend, or just roll solo. (Image courtesy of the League of American Bicyclists.)

Check out the BikeTexas Event Calendar.

With so much fun stuff happening all over the state for Bike Month, you don't want to miss a thing!

Join the National Bike Challenge.

Log your miles and see how you measure up against your fellow Texans. Challenge a friend for extra fun!

... And even more.
