Annual Meeting Report

On a sunny Saturday afternoon last month, BikeTexas board, staff and members came together at our Austin headquarters for the annual membership meeting. Some joined us in person while others, unable to make the trip to Austin, called in to join by teleconference. After a short meet and greet session and introductions all around, the meeting got down to business (minutes below). But it was after the meeting that the real fun began!

Updated: In Remembrance of BikeTexas Lifetime Member David Boyd

David Boyd, native Houstonian and avid mountain bike racer, died on September 3, 2008 in a climbing accident in Colorado. He was 47 years old. Dave was a radiologist, practicing in northwest Houston, and a dedicated outdoorsman. He founded and was captain of the M.O.A.T adventure racing team and competed in mountain bike races all over Texas and the nation. Known and respected by other racers for his athleticism, humility, generosity and good sportsmanship, his untimely death has inspired an outpouring of grief and remembrance from the mountain bike and climbing communities.

Congratulations to Member Rodney Gilmore!

We had a great time during the Hotter'n Hell Hundred Expo updating everyone on what we've been up to, and an even better time Saturday afternoon when we raffled off a cherry red 2009 TREK 7.3 Hybrid. New and renewing members each had the chance to enter to win the bike, and hopes were high as the time of the raffle approached. At 3 pm sharp, we enlisted the help of a young cyclist to draw the winning name out of the bucket and immediately called Rodney with the good news.

Congratulations to BikeTexas member and lucky winner Rodney Gilmore of Houston, and thanks to TREK for donating the beautiful bicycle to BikeTexas.

Good Times Roll at the 2008 NCSL Bipartisan Bike Ride in New Orleans

NCSL Ride 2008

The National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) 4th Annual Bipartisan Bike Ride in New Orleans was a great success. Twenty-five states were represented by ten State Senators, 15 State Representatives and 40 legislative staffers. BikeTexas provided the bicycles and managed the sponsors, registration, design and printing; New Orleans Metro Bicycle Coalition designed the route and provided local, experienced cyclists to shepherd the ride; and NCSL supplied thousands of elected officials and legislative staffers at their annual legislative summit.

Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) hosted the event along with Louisiana House Representative Patrick Connick (R-Merreo). Sponsors Wal-Mart, Allied Waste Services and TXU made the ride possible and sent representatives to ride with the legislators.

Local ride volunteers and BikeTexas staff were at the starting site at 3:00 AM on the morning of the ride to make sure bikes, helmets, coffee and snacks were ready for the 6:45 a.m. start. Two police cruisers and three motorcycles enveloped the V.I.P. bike ride for the eight mile cruise through New Orleans. The ride included New Orleans' first bike lane, the French Quarter and the Musicians Housing built by Habitat for Humanity.

"We were pleased that the senators and representatives were very excited about biking. Many of them had not been on a bike since they were kids," BikeTexas Executive Director Robin Stallings said afterwards.

"That was my first ride with the group and it was so much fun!" said Karianne Fallow, a representative for Wal-Mart and a ride participant. "I'm biking as much as I can these days, as a result of the ride we did in New Orleans."

BikeTexas plans to travel to Philadelphia in summer 2009 for the next NCSL Bipartisan Bike Ride.

Work in Full Swing on 2009 Legislative Session

Though the Texas legislature doesn't convene until January, we are already hard at work on our legislative agenda. The BikeTexas board has been reviewing the options for pro-cycling legislation, but we already know that safe passing legislation will be included. Stay tuned for more details about the legislative agenda as the bills are written and the authors are confirmed. We'll keep you updated in the newsletter and in our Advocacy Update emails.
