BikeTexas Attends Launch of New Texas DMV

On October 30, 2009 BikeTexas Executive Director Robin Stallings attended the press conference announcing the launch of the new Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV).

License plates and a few other functions have moved from the Texas Department of Transportation to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

This is of interest to BikeTexas because TxDMV is one of the key state agencies (Texas Education Agency is the other) that we work with regarding the Share the Road Y'all, God Bless Texas and God Bless America specialty license plates. The revenue from the registration fees of those license plates funds our bike safety education and Safe Routes to School programs.

Kids Kup at Rocky Hill Ranch Near Smithville

Kids Kup Rocky; Hill Ranch November 2009Saturday, November 7, 2009 was a beautiful day for the 24 small mountain bike racers at the BikeTexas Kids Kup at Rocky Hill Ranch.

This was the last Texas Mountin Bike Racing Association (TMBRA) race of the Fall series. Be sure and check the calendar for the Spring Series. If you don't have one already, go get yourself and your child a mountain bike and start a healthy, fun habit. Everyone will love it!

Rocky Hill Ranch is near Smithville, 45 miles out of Austin, and is well worth a trip for the 25 miles of trails for riding and hiking. There is camping, RV hookups, showers, a saloon and café with "Chicken Bingo" (yes, with live chickens!) and a wonderful sunset view from the café.

Members are BikeTexas

BikeTexas is the only statewide bicycle advocacy and education organization in Texas, established in 1991 as the Texas Bicycle Coalition, to advance bicycle access, safety and education. BikeTexas is member, sponsor and affilitate driven. Our member base includes individuals, cycling clubs, cycling events, bike manufacturers, retailers and shops, as well as Chamber of Commerce and other civic organizations.

According to a study produced by the National Sporting Goods Association, about 4 million Texans ride a bicycle at least once a year. Currently, only a tiny fraction of them actively support BikeTexas - imagine the successes that can be achieved if every cyclist in the state joined their voices with ours.

Members provide BikeTexas with numbers that matter. The power and influence of an advocacy organization is intimately linked to the number of active members who support the work of the organization. Membership builds the clout of an organization’s message, and provides it with a network of advocates that can deliver that message to, and educate, legislators at critical times. Membership dues pay the bills, but most importantly, they provide leverage for initiatives like our license plates and education programs.

BikeTexas unifies the Texas cycling community to speak with one voice. This broad, grassroots support base represents a sizable constituency that is recognized by legislators and government agencies. BikeTexas has very solid working relationships with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS), the Texas Education Agency (TEA), the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the U.S. Department of Education as well as with many of our State and Federal legislators. These relationships allow BikeTexas to reach beyond the gatekeepers and bend the ears of people who make decisions. Membership with BikeTexas strengthens this voice. If you haven't already, won't you join us?
