Houston ISD Teachers Receive Bicycle Safety Training

On April 24, 2006, forty-two physical education teachers from Houston ISD attended a six-hour Texas SuperCyclist Curriculum training geared toward teaching fourth and fifth grade elementary students bicycle safety. To date, Texas Bicycle Coalition has provided the free bicycle safety curriculum training to more than 2,800 teachers across the state.

BikeTexas Trail Docs Build Hill Country Trail over Spring Break

The BikeTexas Trail Doctors spent the week of March 13-17 at Camp Eagle (www.campeagle.org), a Christian youth camp located in the beautiful Hill Country region near Rocksprings, Texas. BikeTexas Trail Docs Ryan Spates and Susan Stormer were invited by Camp Director Anthony Scott to spend Spring Break week training and working alongside a large group of students doing mission work. The students had traveled from Truman State University in Missouri.

Coalition Surveys Effectiveness of Texas SuperCyclist Curriculum

Texas Bicycle Coalition is gathering data from teachers trained in the Texas SuperCyclist Curriculum to learn how the program has been disseminated into Texas elementary schools. Since 1996, at least 2,845 teachers have been trained. If you are teacher who has been trained in the Texas SuperCyclist Curriculum, please respond to the brief 8-question survey at www.BikeTexas.org/teachersurvey and receive up to 500 free colored bookmarks for your classroom. Feedback from this survey provides the Coalition information on how to improve the curriculum to create the best fit for the classroom.

TxDOT Hosts National Lifesavers Conference in Austin, April 9-11

Since the early 1980s, the Lifesavers conference has been the United States’ premier national highway safety meeting dedicated to reducing the tragic toll of deaths and injuries on our nation's roadways. This year, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will host the nearly 1,900 participants who will gather in Austin in early April to share common-sense solutions to today's critical highway safety problems.

Planet Bike Supports Bicycle Safety Education

Planet Bike recently made a valuable contribution to bicycle safety training in Texas by donating $15,000 worth of high-quality bicycle floor pumps to the Texas Bicycle Coalition Education Fund.
