Since 1996, Texas Bicycle Coalition has instruct Texas educators in bicycle safety. BikeTexas has trained more than 3,000 Texas educators in the Texas SuperCyclist Curriculum, providing them with the tools necessary to cultivate the next generation of safe and bicycle-friendly road users.
BikeTexas utilizes a network of League Cycling Instructors (LCI) to conduct the teacher trainings. The League of American Bicyclists operates a well-established BikeEd program, offering several bicycle safety courses for new and experienced cyclists. LCIs must complete a series of courses and successfully pass both written and road tests.
Regina Garcia will be conducting an LCI training seminar the weekend of October 7-9 in Houston. David Dick will be teaching Road 1, prerequisite for LCI certification, September 10 from Memorial Park in Houston. More information about BikeEd courses is available on the League website.
LCI certification is a prerequisite for anyone interested in serving as a paid BikeTexas Field Instructor for teacher trainings across the state. With the establishment of a national Safe Routes to School program authorized by the new Federal Transportation bill, qualified bicycle educators will have greater opportunities than ever before to receive compensation for their knowledge and skills.
