Senator Ellis, Capitol Interns Ride at LBJ Ranch

Capitol Interns Ride at LBJ RanchOn March 28, a cold and blustery Saturday morning, interns from the Capitol Intern Program, sponsored by Senator Rodney Ellis, arrived at the BikeTexas office at 8:30 a.m., excited and ready for their journey to the LBJ Ranch. The interns had been invited to participate in a low-key, 10-mile bike ride around the ranch organized by BikeTexas.

Upon arriving at the ranch, the group checked out the visitor's center and a working farm on the park land while BikeTexas staff readied our fleet of bikes for the ride. After a windblown picnic lunch and a bike and helmet fitting, we were ready to roll!

How Badly Do People Want Trails?

On a mild Sunday in January, Houstonians strolled on the recently-scraped construction easement of the planned MKT Trail through the near-downtown Houston Heights, perhaps imagining that the concrete, the trees, and the signage of the finished project were in place.

Shifting Gears a Great Success

Shifting GearsOn Wednesday, January 21st, one day after the inauguration of our new president, former mayor of Bogotá Enrique Peñalosa visited Texas to serve as guest speaker at the BikeTexas Shifting Gears Luncheon and urban bike ride. Newly elected State Senator Wendy Davis hosted the luncheon, filling in for State Sen. Rodney Ellis.

People from all over the state came to hear Mr. Peñalosa speak. The audience included State Representatives Ellen Cohen, Linda Harper-Brown and Elliott Naishtat; city council members and staff from Austin, San Marcos, Elgin and Kyle; transportation and public works officials from as far away as Fort Worth; and representatives from CAMPO, Capital Metro and TxDOT. Sponsors represented included Envision Central Texas; Texas Gas Service; Downtown Austin Alliance; BNSF Railway; Bowman-Melton Associates, Inc.; Bicycle Sport Shop; and Richardson Bike Mart.

Mr. Peñalosa transformed Bogotá with alternative transit, enhanced public spaces, and sidewalks, bike paths and pedestrian streets, and his presentation included transformative images of urban transportation accomplishments from around the world. Undaunted by the challenges facing Texas legislators, state agencies, and the commuting public, Mr. Peñalosa energized the crowd and challenged citizens and officials alike with his acknowledgment that transportation and urban development require political solutions.

Mr. Peñalosa accomplished amazing things as mayor: he built or reconstructed more than 300 kilometers of bike paths, pedestrian streets, and greenways, as well as hundreds of kilometers of sidewalks; created a bus rapid transit system, TransMilenio, that serves 500,000 customers daily; built or improved more than 1,200 parks. He is a true visionary in the field of transportation and urban development, and he made his vision of a Bogotá energized by alternative transit, enhanced public spaces, and sidewalks, bike paths and pedestrian streets a reality.

If you are in the Austin area or can travel here, consider attending the luncheon or bike ride to hear this amazing speaker, and learn how we can duplicate his successes right here in Texas.
