Miles and Miles of (Bike-Friendly) Texas: New Bicycle Friendly Communities Announced

NAACP 2014-2The stars in Texas keep getting brighter for people who ride bikes: three Texas cities were added to the League of American Bicyclists' Bicycle Friendly Communities list this week!

Congratulations to our three new Honorable Mention cities:

El Paso

Hollywood Park

These cities join Frisco, on the Honorable Mention list since the spring, and Fort Worth, on the list since 2012. Want to see your city on the list in the next round in Spring 2015? We can help! While Texas' current Bicycle Friendly State ranking is disappointing, Texas has four Bicycle Friendly Communities that have surpassed honorable mention: Austin (Silver), Houston (Bronze), San Antonio (Bronze), and The Woodlands (Bronze). We also have Bicycle Friendly Businesses around the state, including five new ones recognized in the most recent round, and two Bicycle Friendly Universities: Texas Tech University in Lubbock and The University of Texas at Austin

These designations represent a lot of hard work and determination to make Texas a great place to ride a bike. Here's what it looks like by the numbers:

  • 6,230,230 Texans live in a Bicycle Friendly Community
  • 42,548 Texans work for a Bicycle Friendly Business
  • 84,223 Texas students attend a Bicycle Friendly University
