BikeTexas Ambassadors in Lubbock

Children playing Jenny's NeighborhoodThe BikeTexas Ambassadors traveled to Lubbock on October 19 to be a part of the 2nd Bike Awareness event at the South Plains Mall. This was a partnership with West Texas Cycling Association (WTCA) and Texas Tech University Health Science Center (TTUHSC) of Lubbock.

In addition to letting kids try out the new Jenny's Neighborhood game, BikeTexas also handed out 400 copies of Texas Bike Laws and 200 bike activity books. WTCA fitted 280 children's helmets, donated by TTUHSC.

WTCA, BikeTexas, and UHSC co-sponsored this event to let the public know that people riding bikes are on the road and are vulerable. WTCA provided a video loop of bike riders lost to distracted driving in West Texas, including WTCA member Paul Nichols who was legally riding his bike when he was hit and killed by a distracted driver this past June. Paul's Ghost Bike was on display at the event so that passersby could see it and learn what the white bikes on the side of the road mean.

Despite the somber theme of the day, BikeTexas Ambassadors Durwood and Allene were able to talk with many West Texas residents about bike safety and how much fun it is to ride a bike.
