San Antonio TxDOT District Conducting Pavement Bikeability Test

The San Antonio District of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is seeking feedback from cyclists on pavement options. Texas Bicycle Coalition encourages cyclists to take advantage of this opportunity to influence the road surfaces cyclists will ride on in the future.

The district has built four 800-foot-long pavement test sections on the eastbound shoulder of SH 16, near Helotes, about six miles northwest of Loop 1604. TxDOT would like to know the cycling community’s preferences regarding texture and color and will use the feedback as guidance for future San Antonio District projects. The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is assisting TxDOT in its bicycle plan and will analyze the responses. If you’re in the San Antonio area in the next few months, please ride the sections and let TxDOT know your preferences by completing the feedback form.

UTSA and TxDOT will collect data until this summer. They encourage cyclists to respond as soon as possible so that preferences can be included in planning for upcoming projects such as the design of RM 187 in Bandera County and the Utopia 100K route linking Lost Maples and Garner State Parks.
