Safe Passing Bill Hearing in
State House Transportation Committee!
An Update, and What You Can Do.

What's happening now.

The 2009 Safe Passing bill, House Bill HB 827, authored by Representatives Linda Harper-Brown, Carol Kent, Eddie Lucio III and Ellen Cohen, will be heard by the Texas State House Committee on Transportation on Tuesday, March 24 at 8:00 am, in room E2.014.

The bill includes the "3-feet clearance" provision for cars passing cyclists. It has also been expanded to address right and left hooks and harassment for a range of "vulnerable road users" including pedestrians, persons in wheelchairs, utility workers, motorcyclists and others on the road or roadside not in a protective steel vehicle shell. ACTION ALERT - Senate Committee Meeting Canceled

Dear Fellow Cyclists,

The Transportation and Homeland Security Committee scheduled for March 11 has been CANCELED. SB 488, the Safe Passing bill will not be heard on March 11. Please stay tuned for the next step in advancing the Safe Passing bill. Thank you. The BikeTexas Legislative Team.

All of us know how important this bill is for the overall safety of cyclists in Texas. We are optimistic that we will have success but we all must still work every step of the way in this laborious process. ACTION ALERT - Austin Cyclists! Show up! Safe Passing Bill

Dear fellow Austin area cyclists,

Please attend the Senate Committee Hearing on the Safe Passing Bill - SB 488 - Tomorrow (Wednesday March 11) at 7:30AM at the Capitol in E1.016. Wear a suit!

We need as many attendees as possible to help insure passage of both SB 488 (Safe Passing) and SB 161 (Safe Routes to School). If you can get to the capitol tomorrow morning PLEASE do it. It is very, very important.

ACTION ALERT - Support the Boardwalk at Lady Bird Lake

Then show your support for the Boardwalk!


Austin area cyclists:

The City Council will vote on this Thursday, March 5th, on a resolution to approve the Riverside Boardwalk Trail's current alignment as presented by the Parks and Recreation Department. Join us at a press event Thursday morning, and show Council your support moving forward:

  • Email the City Council to urge them to vote yes on Agenda Item #10 and move the process forward.
  • Join us at a press event in support of the Boardwalk Trail project at 9:30 a.m. on the City Hall plaza this Thursday.
  • When you come to the press event, be sure to go inside and sign up in favor of the Boardwalk agenda item. You can sign up "in favor, not wishing to speak" and you don't have to stick around and wait for the item to come up. The Council will see that you've registered your support and will read it into the record.
