We need your help! Complete Streets (SB 565) and Safe Passing (SB 1515) have not yet been scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Transportation Committee. Time is running out for these bills in the legislative session.
Senator Robert Nichols of District 3 is the Transportation Committee Chair. If you live in Sen. Nichols' district, you have influence that advocates in the rest of the state do not. If you do not live in District 3, please do not contact the Senator. Everyone will have a chance to contact his/her Senator as soon as this bill passes from the Committee to the full Senate. Until then, hold tight! Not sure what district you're in? Find your senator here.
TAKE ACTION NOW:
1. My name is _____ and I live in District 3.
2. My occupation is _____.
3. I (or my spouse/child/parent) ride a bicycle.
4. Will Senator Nichols grant a hearing on SB 565 and SB 1515?
ACT NOW so Complete Streets and Safe Passing can progress before time runs out on the session. Thank you for making Texas a great place to bike and walk!

Earlier this week we thought the transportation conference was dead and we were headed for another extension. Over the last two days, Senate and House leadership decided to push for a bill by June 30, directing the Transportation Conference Committee to go into serious negotiations for a final bill. Top on their agenda: working out an agreement on bike/ped funding. Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison sits on the Conference Committee, and has been a key supporter of biking and walking in the past. She needs to hear from you to continue pushing for the initiatives that make Texas safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
Can you call Senator Hutchison's Office right now?

Dallas: 214-361-3500 | Houston: 713-653-3456 | San Antonio: 210-340-2885

Your ask: Will the Senator work to maintain the Cardin-Cochran agreement and ensure that Transportation Alternatives does not allow states to opt-out of local control over local transportation projects, including biking and walking improvements?
We've shown that 83% of Americans support maintaining or increasing federal funding for biking and walking.
We've demonstrated that biking and walking projects effectively create more jobs with fewer federal dollars than other transportation projects.
Your support has been critical to getting to where we are now: down to the wire and still with the possibility to save biking and walking.
Personal emails and phone calls have a huge impact - much more so than form letters. Your phone call and email to Senator Hutchison should:
As America Bikes reported today, the impending June 30 deadline means that Conferees will have to finish their report by Wednesday next week. Once a conference report is written it is impossible to change it. Congress can only vote yes or no on a conference report -- there is no amendment process. Its almost impossible for a transportation bill to get voted down at that stage. The final chance for public input is right now.
Please Contact Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison ASAP Representatives Eddie-Bernice Johnson (Dallas) and Ralph Hall (Rockwall) also sit on the conference committee. If you live in either of those districts please contact them as well. If we know you are a constituent we will send a second email shortly.
Thank you for taking the time to stand up for bicycling and walking in Texas. |

To all Texas bicycle supporters:
Developments last week on the federal transportation bill are ominous and threaten to completely eliminate programs that fund trails, walking and bicycling. Right now, the Senate must hold the line in negotiations on the next federal transportation bill, and you are the key to convincing Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison to stand strong for Texas.
As reported by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, last Thursday evening, the House conferees delivered a countermeasure to the Senate offer. The Senate version had retained the compromises already reached on Transportation Enhancements, Safe Routes to School and Recreational Trails. But the House response demands further evisceration of these programs, eliminating even the downsized pot of money available to them. On top of that, it gives each state's governor (a euphemism for Department of Transportation) the option of eliminating these programs altogether.
