Today, August 25, 2010, BikeTexas is posting an online petition against bike bans. Please take a moment to sign it and support Texas cyclists' right to ride.
Many Texas cyclists are aware that the City Council of Bartonville, a small rural community just south of Denton, amended a city ordinance this past June to restrict the number of cyclists passing through their incorporated area. Bartonville is a popular riding area for many DFW-area cyclists and clubs, and this ban will affect them greatly.
We are asking Texas cyclists to support the rights of cyclists to the road by signing the "No Bike Bans!" petition and encouraging family and friends, whether cyclists or not, to sign as well. This petition will also be available at the BikeTexas Hotter'N Hell booth this coming weekend.
The Bartonville ordinance language change requires groups of 10 or more cyclists on "training rides" to obtain a permit from the City of Bartonville under city race and rally permit requirements.

What ride had a great start 28 years ago, just keeps on growing, and has as its centerpiece a local asset previously viewed as a liability?
Here's a few hints. Twelve hundred cyclists for the inaugural ride in 1982. Endurance riders numbering 12,650 in 2009 with 14,205 total event participants. And weather that's, you've guessed it, Hotter n' Hell.
Get ready for the next installment of Wichita Falls' Hotter'N Hell Hundred (HHH) on the weekend of August 26-29, with the flagship Endurance Ride of 10K, 25 miles, 50 miles, 100K and of course 100 miles kicking off in downtown Wichita Falls at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 28. Described as "a regional, family ride" by HHH Executive Director Chip Filer, the event attracts riders from all across the nation and overseas. Even doing just the 10K will let you experience the "dynamics and human energy unleashed at the starting line."

Over $50 million for bicycle and pedestrian facilities and education funding was awarded by the Texas Transportation Commission (TTC) to cities all over Texas on July 29th! The bike/ped portion represented 42 of 54 projects awarded Federal Transportation Enhancement Program funds.
Enhancements or TE funds have been the major source of bicycle facility funding in Texas since their creation in the federal transportation bill (ISTEA) in 1991. BikeTexas played a major role at the federal level in saving the program from cuts in the 2005 transportation reauthorization (SAFETEA-Lu). Our spokesperson at the time, Linda Armstrong Kelly, appeared on TV news stations across the country and joined staff in meeting with members of Congress to discuss the importance of the program.

Contributed by Tom Neagli, Owner of Bay Area Bicycles
On July 10 and 11, 2010, Bay Area Bicycles of Corpus Christi sponsored the first League of American Bicyclists event in their city. Preston Tyree, the Director of Education for the League, led the group of seventeen in Traffic Skills 101, the first step cyclists must take to become a League Certified Instructor (LCI).
The question came up as to why sponsor this major task? Because cycling in Corpus Christi is growing. At the present moment there is no structured cycling education for experienced or beginner cyclists, we must change and show the city that we are improving our skills. By the end of 2011 the goal is to have close to 20 LCIs and over 100 people attend Traffic Skills 101 in Corpus Christi.

The sixth annual NCSL Bipartisan Bike Ride in Louisville, Kentucky was a huge success. About 100 state senators, representatives, spouses and legislative staff donned helmets and meandered through Louisville, Kentucky early Wednesday morning, July 28th. The route was a mix of on- and off-street. The Louisville Police Department provided an escort and "corked" the intersections. The LPD escort plus a traffic helicopter overhead made us all feel very special.
One of the elected officials who participated said afterward, "The bipartisan bike ride was a tremendous promotion for exercise, safety and the enjoyment of cycling... Thank You Soo Much!!!"
