For the last 20 years, Desert Sports has kicked off the Starlight Theater 100K Mas O Menos Mountain Bike Fest in the austere, beautiful desert landscape around the ghost mining town of Terlingua, just outside Big Bend National Park.
Unfortunately, the popular Texas Mountain Bike Racing Association (TMBRA) Spring Championship Point Series event has been cancelled for February 2010 as agreements with landowners along the route could not be reached. The folks at Desert Sports ask off-road cyclists to stay tuned - that they will be back soon with a new and exciting event that will still make Far West Texas a mountain bike event destination.
BikeTexas Annual Meeting Wrap-Up
The BikeTexas Annual Membership Meeting took place on Saturday, September 12 from 4-5 pm. We welcomed aboard two new board members, Iris Stagner of Mineral Wells and Andy Hollinger of Bedford, and gave a full report on the progress and challenges of the past year, including our legislative successes (SB 161 and SB 2041) and disappointments (the veto of the Safe Passing Bill). We were pleased to report on our growing membership and the success of the monthly member program. After the meeting ended, those of us in Austin stayed to chat and catch up over beer and snacks. Thanks to all the members that participated either in person or via the web conference.
Hotter 'n Hell: And the Winner Is...
Kim Fredenberg of Dallas!
Congratulations to Kim for winning our membership drive raffle for the 2010 Trek 1.2 road bike.
Thanks to Texas Trek Dealers for donating the awesome bike. The bicycle drawing is a great way to reward cyclists who support our advocacy work and we really appreciate Trek and their Texas Dealers for their continued and steadfast support.
As you know if you attended the ride, this year at Hotter'n Hell it was only hot as heck, with the high temperature on Saturday in the low to mid-nineties. It was quite a relief to the riders, including the two BikeTexas staff who rode.
In addition to the weather, the event was a great success for BikeTexas. We gathered hundreds of signatures for our Safe Passing Petition, and beat last year's numbers of new and renewing members! People were fired up about the Governor's veto of the Safe Passing legislation and were glad to be able to do something about it.
Thanks to all the members who came by the BikeTexas booth to join, renew or just say hi - we love getting to put faces with our members' names. Thank you for the support, and we'll see you next year at HHH!
BikeTexas Happenings at Hotter n' Hell
Volunteer to help gather Safe Passing Petition signatures at HHH BikeTexas staff is gearing up for its advocacy booth at the biggest bike exposition in Texas, the 28th Annual Hotter n' Hell Hundred (HHH) Expo and century ride in Wichita Falls, August 26-29, 2009. If you can spare an hour or two, please volunteer to gather signatures with us at HHH for the petition on Governor Perry's veto of the Safe Passing Bill this past June. Come by our booth, or email Emma at
Join or renew your membership for a chance to WIN a 2010 TREK bike from your favorite Texas TREK Dealer! Petition signers, HHH attendees and all members - if you join or renew this August (before the HHH), your name will be entered in our drawing for a bike, to be conducted on Saturday afternoon at the HHH Expo BikeTexas booth. The bike (pictured) is a 2010 Trek Model 1.2 road bike with a suggested retail value of $879.99, donated by Texas TREK dealers. You don't have to attend to win!
