Introducing the BikeTexas ParentsPlus Program

Introducing ParentsPlusBikeTexas is excited to announce that on October 1, 2009, we began the development of the new BikeTexas ParentsPlus Program. The program is funded through a Texas Department of Transportation grant, and will provide parents, plus other adults concerned with bicycle and pedestrian safety, the certification training and resources necessary to develop neighborhood bicycling and walking events. These events will incorporate safety messages in a fun and healthy venue and will bring the safety lessons to the larger community, thus amplifying their effect.

Safe Passing Ordinances Gaining Momentum Among Texas Cities

Safe Passing

In October, the City of Austin showed itself to be a leader by passing Texas's first citywide Safe Passing ordinance. (Click here for a piece by UT journalism student Melanie Torre, featuring an interview with BikeTexas Executive Director Robin Stallings.)

But other Texas cities are not far behind. Cyclists in towns and cities from around Texas are organizing to get their city councils to commit to the safety of all road users by enacting a Safe Passing ordinance.

BikeTexas Attends Launch of New Texas DMV

On October 30, 2009 BikeTexas Executive Director Robin Stallings attended the press conference announcing the launch of the new Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV).

License plates and a few other functions have moved from the Texas Department of Transportation to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

This is of interest to BikeTexas because TxDMV is one of the key state agencies (Texas Education Agency is the other) that we work with regarding the Share the Road Y'all, God Bless Texas and God Bless America specialty license plates. The revenue from the registration fees of those license plates funds our bike safety education and Safe Routes to School programs.
