Irving Holds Annual Bike Fest

Irving-Bike-Fest-webThe City of Irving celebrated their third annual Bike Fest on May 19. The event is a time for cyclists of all ages and abilities to come together for fun and to learn about bicycle laws and safety.

Francesca Funk of the Irving Bike Lane Task Force says, “The Irving Bicycle Fest was started in 2010 to celebrate cycling and give Irving cyclists a chance to gather. Irving is home to so many different types of cyclists, from people who just like leisurely trail rides, to more serious cyclists—such as road cycling clubs, off-roaders, and crit competitors—and to the many often-overlooked (low-income) 'necessity' cyclists.”

In addition to the fun and camaraderie, BikeDFW offered a bike safety rodeo. Over 100 children had their bikes looked over for any repairs needed (courtesy of Grapevine Bike Center and Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association) before learning important cycling skills. Volunteers were on hand to fit helmets for kids and educate them and their parents about the importance of always wearing a helmet.

Another fun aspect of this year’s fest was the bicycle blender. BikeDFW and local Irving businesses partnered together to provide a blender, “motor” (a bicycle), and ingredients for smoothies. Kids and adults alike participated in this active eating event.
