Alfredo P. "Freddy" Ramirez

Nominee for Board Member - Incumbent
Corpus Christi

OCCUPATION: Professional Engineer (P.E.)

WHAT STRENGTHS OR SPECIFIC SKILLS CAN YOU BRING TO THE TEXAS BICYCLE COALITION?

As a P.E., I have specific knowledge related to AASHTO (American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials) and MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices) requirements for bicycle infrastructure.  I have experience working with Traffic Engineers at the State (TxDOT), County (Nueces) and City (Corpus Christi) level.  Basically, I speak engineering.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT LEVEL OF BICYCLE INVOLVEMENT?  INCLUDE ORGANIZATIONS AND ACTIVITIES YOU ARE ASSOCIATED WITH:

I am currently President of the South Texas Area Riders, Runners and Swimmers (STARRS) multi-sport club.  Our club sponsors triathlons, running events, swim meets and bicycle rides.  We are a sponsor of Conqueror the Coast.  I am also League of American Bicyclists certified instructor (LCI).  In addition, I am a three-time Ironman triathlete.

WHAT GOALS DO YOU ENVISION FOR BIKETEXAS?

I would like to see a more distributed model for Bike Texas.  I believe that it would be possible to have regional one-person type offices within the State to have greater interaction with local cycling activities.  BikeTexas should further develop alliances with cycling events around the State to promote safe cycling in addition to creating more name recognition.

FUNDRAISING AND MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT ARE CRUCIAL FOR THE SUCCESS OF BIKETEXAS WHAT IDEAS DO YOU HAVE FOR ACHIEVING SUCCESS IN THESE AREAS?

It is my hope that we could create a Bike Texas cycling series with rides in all the major cities at various distances.  The rides would be coordinated by Bike Texas with some of the proceeds being shared with local charities that helped to provide the manpower for the rides.  I can easily see the Bike Texas Coastal 100 being created since no century rides exist in the Corpus Christi area.
