Austin needs to spend money — $300 million over the next 20 years — to put Austin on par with bike-friendly cities such as Portland, Stallings says. The city should start by focusing on projects that would generate the most trips. Paint — and bike lanes — are relatively cheap, but many people are not comfortable in bike lanes and prefer separated pathways.
