His other prior experience includes sales, retail, bicycle mechanic and technician, magazine writer, Spanish translator, bicycle consultant and bike racer. He has more than 22 years of experience in the cycling community. Originally from Mexico City, Fernando attended Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland and holds a certificate in business administration management. He has volunteered for the Girls and Boys Clubs of America and with various bicycle advocacy groups. After spending so many years in cycling, Fernando is excited about the opportunity to give something back by passing his knowledge on to children and the Amarillo community.
“I was 13 years old and involved in soccer and other sports when Gonzalo Munoz de Cote introduced me to cycling. He said - 'Get on a bike. Cycling is like life, with all it's up and downs. Always pedal forward, pay attention to what is coming your way and deal with it by switching gears. Cycling will change your life.' And it did. Bike races are excellent teaching tools. They teach kids to finish what they start and gives them an experience they will all never forget. After all my years of racing, touring, and commuting, I've learned that cycling can become a life style and I hope to pass this knowledge on to a new generation. I’m very happy to be a part of helping Amarillo and it's surrounding communities by doing what I can to help keep our children safe.” - Fernando Martinez, September 2006.

"Having an elementary school age child really brings home the issues all parents face in regards to letting their kids walk or bike to school. We've accomplished much in promoting the BikeTexas Safe Routes To School Program in my home town of Fort Worth. I focused much of my attention on the most economically disadvantage school I could find, Sunrise-McMillian Elementary. The nearby JPS health clinic and Fort Worth Police Department teamed up to assist in giving out 100 helmets and Bikes4Tykes donated 10 bikes so more kids could bike safely to school. The ISD installed a bike rack too so the school made a lot of progress the first year of the program." KC Jones, September 2006.

Lisa joined the Texas Bicycle Coalition as a volunteer in July, 2004. She soon accepted a paid position working on special projects (e.g., bike rodeo set-ups). In October, 2004 she became Evaluation Director with the goal to design the methodology and conduct evaluations for the PEP-funded BikeTexas Safe Routes to School program. In addition, she monitors teachers’ experience at trainings and conducts membership surveys. Her evaluation of Safe Routes to School will partially fulfill her doctoral degree requirements in clinical psychology at University of Texas, Austin. Lisa grew up in Oregon, attended college at Kenyon College in Gambier, OH, and received a M.A. in clinical psychology from UT-Austin. Concurrently to her position at the Coalition, she is a Central Nervous Systems Research Fellow at INC Research, a contract research organization, and a psychometrist at the Austin Neurological Clinic. She has experience teaching college courses, facilitating research trials, conducting group and individual therapy, and administering neuropsychological batteries. This eclectic background has increased her strength in designing and managing the evaluations as a representative of the Coalition.
“I have been lucky to integrate two passions of mine: psychology and cycling. As a graduate student in clinical psychology, the social learning theories have greatly informed my evaluation projects at the Coalition. In addition, my experience as a bicycle commuter (> 100 miles p/wk) and as a triathlete, energize me to train and motivate children to bicycle often and safely.” Lisa Groesz, October 2006.
