Kohl’s department store wants to let Amarillo know that their Kohl’s Cares for Kids is not just a program, it’s a promise. They have partnered with Northwest Texas Health Care System’s Children’s Hospital to provide hope for a brighter, healthier future for kids in our community.

Bicycle safety was discussed and literature given to 265 of the estimated 300 children attending. Each year between 20 and 25 percent of children will sustain an injury serious enough to require medical attention, missed school or bed rest.

Kohl’s was joined by fire safety, gun safety, emergency medical services, farm & ranch safety, poison control, animal control, water safety, car/car seat safety, as well as bicycle/helmet safety as they strive for “Leading by example, following our hearts, inspiring others, and making a real difference for kids in our community”.

Unintentional and preventable injuries are the leading cause of death for children under the age of 14. Diseases like measles and whooping cough that have been controlled for years are making a comeback because some families can’t afford to immunize their children. In addition, many parents are unaware that their child’s car seat is not properly installed or realize the life and death choice of fastening a seatbelt or wearing a bike helmet. Kohl’s has partnered with children’s hospitals across the country to help change those statistics.
