Local Political Bike Ride Develops Government Relationships
Thursday, 04 May 2006

Friday, April 29, cyclists in Austin joined Mayor Will Wynn and several city council candidates for a bike ride through downtown. The tenth annual Political Pedal was organized by members of Austin’s cycling community and sponsored by the Austin Cycling Association and other community partners. Texas Bicycle Coalition provided posters, logistical support and resources for participants.

Other Texas cities are encouraged to coordinate their own events similar to Austin’s Political Pedal. Texas Bicycle Coalition can provide resources and support to help jumpstart the effort. The more that cyclists reach out to their elected officials and invite them to participate as cyclists themselves, the more likely the cycling community is to reach an understanding of support for cycling from local government officials. In Austin, the Political Pedal ride was followed by a Cyclists’ Happy Hour at a downtown venue. The event provided a great opportunity for cyclists and elected officials to meet and discuss local bicycle issues. Not only is this a really fun excuse to join your cycling friends for a cold beverage, the event also makes a really great news story.

Political Pedal organizers in Austin received numerous calls about the event, and several media outlets were present at City Hall for a brief press conference held before the ride. Austin cyclists were especially encouraged that at least half a dozen candidates for city council attended the ride and happy hour, demonstrating that these candidates recognize the size and strength of the cycling community in Austin.
