At this year’s Texas Bicycle Coalition booth at the BP MS 150 in Houston, Coalition staff received some unexpected help in selling bike-for-a-buck pins.
Clayton Giraudin has been raising money and riding for the event since he was 10 years old; this year will be his seventh time riding from Houston to Austin. In the past few years he has raised several thousand dollars for the MS cause. This year, the 16-year-old also helped Texas Bicycle Coalition raise more than $100 by soliciting folks who walked by or into the Coalition’s booth to donate a dollar to the Coalition, and in return they could choose from a variety of colorful bike pins. Many of the folks Clayton solicited went on to join the Coalition as members!
This was the first time that the Coalition has sold all of the pins brought to an event. Clayton exemplified a master salesman/fundraiser with his energy, charm and eagerness to help, skills he’ll find useful as he pursues a summer job at an area bike shop this year. Clayton is now one of the youngest members of the Texas Bicycle Coalition, and we hope that some day in the future he will use his skills to promote bicycle advocacy and education.
