Proposed bicyclist ban could put brakes on Lubbock training camps

A proposed bill banning groups of bicyclists from certain roadways has caught the ire of cyclists in Lubbock and the state capital.

A proposal authored by state Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, would ban groups of three or more bicyclists from farm-to-market roads that lack improved shoulders.

Hundreds of people have voiced opposition to the measure and numerous others have offered their support, according to Wentworth's Web site.

The active legislative agenda regarding bicyclists is primarily positive, said Gayle Cummins, Texas Bicycle Coalition's executive director.

"We want to see kids getting active again. We want the streets to be safe in order for them to do that," she said.

Another bill would allow county and municipal governments to implement helmet programs. The attempt to implement helmet laws this year is more comprehensive than previous efforts, Cummins said.

"The Band-Aid answer is not to strap a helmet on a kid and think that will protect them. You have to have education," she said.
