Coronado Does It Again
Tuesday, 28 March 2006

Coronado Elementary School is On the Go for Bicycle Safety. Vice-Principal Delores Scott and Physical Education teacher Jerry Smith invited Fernando Martinez and Joyce Cunningham of Texas Bicycle Coalition to demonstrate some of the Texas SuperCyclist Curriculum activities. On Friday, March 24, the third, fourth and fifth grade students participated in the importance of wearing a helmet, proper helmet fitting, mock handlebar exercise, traffic hand signals, Texas bicycle laws, importance of bicycle repair and maintenance, safe cycling practices and bicycle parts identification relay as part of their morning workout.

Students and faculty were gracious in their reception and eagerness to learn. Most of the students responded yes to “Do you ride a bicycle”. These students admit riding for fun; they didn’t think of their bicycle as a vehicle for transportation. After a discussion they agreed that their bicycle is their first vehicle and they need to act responsibly while riding. The helmet-egg drop demonstration amazed the students with what could happen to their brain if they ride without proper protective gear.

Once again, everyone walked away with an increased knowledge and understanding of bicycle laws and etiquette. The new From A to Z by Bike workbooks and Share The Road bookmarks were well-received and prompted many questions from the students. Martinez and Cunningham used this opportunity to encourage their involvement and the use of the Texas SuperCyclist Curriculum for the Coronado students to introduce proper bike safety for the upcoming Texas Bike and Walk to School Day on April 27.

Thank you to Vice-Principal Scott and Mr. Smith for inviting us, and to Principal Mike Eckhart for acknowledgement of a job well done.
