Learning for a Lifetime

Friday, March 10 was an in-school field trip day at Coronado Elementary School. Students were allowed to choose what skills they wanted to learn more about and visit classes without leaving their school campus. The presenters came to the students for this unusual event.

Exposing students to a variety of opportunities at an early age can give them more incentive to nourish their interests for better success. And the choices were many... Jewelry making, egg shell decorating, cake decorating and Lego creations for the artful enthusiasts. Tennis, gymnastics, karate and cheer-nastics were offered for the more sport-minded kids. Animal lovers had pet training and horses to choose from.

Safety topics included stranger danger, survival skills, firemen and bicycle safety. Even music lovers were represented by guitar and drum instruction. And if those didn’t excite you, the choices continued to nutri-clowns, modeling, doctor dirt and cooking.

Third, fourth and fifth grade students practiced with Texas Bicycle Coalition’s Betsy and Local Outreach Coordinators Fernando Martinez and Joyce Cunningham to learn traffic hand signals, proper helmet fitting and "why I should wear a helmet when I ride my bike." The children were quick and eager learners. Basic safety education can be carried through their adult lives even if it is not in their chosen career field. Betsy and the students (and some teachers) had fun practicing their new skills and are ready to get out and ride safely as summer-like weather takes over Amarillo.
