Volunteers Needed to Create Safe Routes to Schools
Texas Bicycle Coalition's Local Outreach Coordinator Durwood Mayfield was interviewed for a television news story about BikeTexas Safe Routes to School in Lubbock. The Coalition needs volunteers to help make the program a success.

Roscoe Wilson is part of the Bike Texas, Safe Routes to School program. The federally funded program helps schools get grants to create safer routes for the trip to and from school.
Durwood Mayfield is the Outreach Coordinator for this region. He says, "We'll go around check sidewalks and walk around with the P.T.A. or with parents and teachers. We'll actually walk the neighborhood and pick out things that keep kids from biking or walking to school."
Mayfield says, "We need volunteers to keep the program going." The program is looking for volunteers within not only the Lubbock school district but in a few rural communities surrounding Lubbock as well. They're targeting Lubbock, Slaton, Post, Snyder, Lamesa, Brownfield, Levelland, Littlfield, Muleshoe and Plainview.
